A whiff of a corset in Perfume
January 5, 2007
Patrick Suskind's Das Parfum is transformed into a Gallic whirlwind of sin, scent and stunning corseted beauties by Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer.
Telling the tale of Jean Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), a foundling who essentially raises himself in 18th century France and grows up with a desire to create the perfect perfume.
However, his quest rapidly becomes an obsession, leading to the brutal murder of a succession of corset-sporting beauties in order to capture their unique essence.
But perfume is far from a run-of-the-mill serial killer story, most notably for the protagonist's motivations.
Far from being an inherently evil character, Jean Baptiste has essentially grown up without morals, unaware that murdering young women to capture their sent is in any way wrong.
The result is a thought provoking, atmospheric and emotional journey, probing the dark underbelly of society in a film adaptation that would make Patrick Suskind proud.
Perfume is playing at cinemas across the UK now.
