American corsets explored
March 23, 2009
American women's relationship with the corset will be explored as part of a new exhibition.
From Corsets to Consciousness will take place at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Connecticut early next month.
Exploring women's underwear from the Victorian era through to the modern day, the exhibition is to feature some of the first corsets made in America.
Corset expert Joyce Baran has put the display together and will guide visitors through the development of lingerie and the relationship between society, culture and clothing.
Baran will be on hand to offer little-known insights into the introduction of the corset and information on how the garments were made and adopted into society, as well as her take on contemporary women's underwear.
The museum is a US National Historic Landmark and attracts thousands of visitors each year. As well as a host of exhibitions related to the Victorian era, the mansion has also featured in several films including The Stepford Wives.
