Anime fans use corsets to get cartoon look
May 29, 2007
Fans of Japanese animation are so desperate to look like characters from the cartoons they admire that they use corsets to give them the right shape, the San Jose Mercury reports.
In a sub-culture known as 'cosplay', anime fans dress up and role-play as their favourite manga characters.
Reporters at the FanimeCon manga convention spoke to Daniel Ericskon a corset-maker in Albuquerque, about the latest corset craze, which is popular among both women and men.
"San Jose's convention draws a very young crowd and very diverse crowd, as far as anime conventions go," said Mr Erickson. "For many people who want to really look like a certain cartoon character, they first have to change their body shape; corsets help do that. We've sold 30 so far to women, and another five to men.
"I'd have to say FanimeCon is one of the most adventurous conventions we attend. You see a real fearless kind of guy here in San Jose."
