BBC goes corset mad with Wide Sargasso Sea
October 5, 2006
The BBC is set for corset fever on Monday as the much awaited production of the prequel to Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre shows on BBC Four.
Wide Sargasso Sea tells the story of Mr Rochester's first wife, the passionate Creole heiress, Antoinette and is filled with corseted clinches and sexual intrigue.
Adapted from Jean Rhys' award-winning novel, Wide Sargasso Sea is set in Jamaica following the emancipation of the slaves, but portrays a very different character to the 'mad wife' made famous in Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece.
Antoinette is portrayed in a far more sympathetic light than in Jane Eyre, which many have something to do with Jean Rhys being a Creole herself.
Meanwhile, the heat of Jamaica made wearing the obligatory corset something of a strain for female members of the cast, but the historical authenticity they provide is clear from the outset.
Rebecca Hall, who plays Antoinette, looks very inch the part with her corseted hourglass figure, as do Nina Sosanya, Victoria Hamilton and Katrine de Candole in supporting roles.
