BBC looks to corset-wearing Edwardians
November 1, 2006
BBC4 is preparing to launch a season of Edwardian entertainment next year, with corsets no doubt featuring prominently.
Corsets were almost mandatory for women of high-standing during the Edwardian era and as such the garments will no doubt feature strongly in the various period dramas and other entertainment put on by the channel during the season.
Speaking to the Observer, BBC4 boss Janice Hadlow revealed that the Edwardian season would include a variety of shows, from a dramatisation of George and Weedon Grossmith's novel, The Diary of a Nobody, to a reality programme in which two celebrities will live on a middle-class Edwardian diet.
Whether the celebrities will be required to dress in Edwardian clothes was not clear, however.
Corsets during the Edwardian period were far removed from today's versions, with whalebone often providing an uncomfortable support - a far cry from today's more sensual garments.
