BBC's autumn season sees corsets galore
July 13, 2007
This autumn, viewers of the BBC will be treated to a visual feast of corsets as three new period dramas have been announced for the coming season.
Firstly the Cranford Chronicles will feature 1840s-style corsets in a dramatisation of three Elizabeth Gaskell novels, created by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin and written by Heidi Thomas. The story is based on the Cheshire market town of Cranford where a revolution is occurring due to new railways encroaching on the area and bringing migrant workers. The adaptation will star Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Michael Gambon, Imelda Staunton and Philip Glenister.
Next up on the corset roll call will be Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, which will star Timothy Spall as Fagin and Tom Hardy as Bill Sykes. The series has been adapted by Sarah Phelps and directed by Coky Giedroyc.
Last but not least, Jane Austen productions always feature a number of beautiful corsets.
With BBC1's new Austen offering, Miss Austen Regrets, corsets will surely feature in the dramatisation of the final years of Jane Austen's life.
Meanwhile those looking for a bit more up-to-date corset fashion will be glad to know that the BBC is also planning a documentary about the reforming of the Spice Girls.
