British corset drama nominated for 9 Emmys
August 29, 2007
BBC TV series Jane Eyre has been nominated in nine categories for this years' Emmy awards, including Outstanding Costumes for a Miniseries.
Director Susanna White has already worked with Victorian corsets, having completed an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Bleak House for the BBC, which has already won awards.
Ms Whyte explained what motivated her to film the series: "It's a universal story that I think all females relate to," she told Variety magazine.
"Of course it's a period piece, but I didn't want the audience to look at the film and see Jane as an actress dressed up in a corset; I wanted them to see her as a young woman experiencing what young women of all eras go through," she added. "We've all been through that 'Does he find me attractive? Will I ever find a partner?' rite of passage."
Moving far away from corset drama, Ms White is now filming Generation Kill, an action series about the Iraq war.
"Every director wants to make an action film, and I am loving every minute of it," Ms White said. "The contrast with 'Jane Eyre' couldn't be greater."
Meanwhile viewers will have to wait until September to find out if Jane Eyre picks up any awards. It faces stiff competition in the corset stakes from US series Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, which has been nominated 17 times.
