Burlesque corsets hit Manhattan
July 29, 2009
A vintage cabaret event featuring performers in burlesque corsets has taken 21st-century New York by storm.
The Nouvelle Epoque Cabaret-Salon has held a vintage-inspired party in Manhattan with guests in traditional period corsets entertained by burlesque dancers, a swing band and a tap-dancing act, the New York Times reported.
This celebration of the 1920s was held in the city's popular Players club, which was originally founded in 1888 and has counted the author Mark Twain and the civil war hero William Tecumseh among its esteemed members.
Larisa Fuchs, the Brooklyn-based promoter that organised the event, explained that she wanted to recapture the period's atmosphere of "great change".
She told the newspaper: "In the dark, dinky cabarets, there was smoke-filled entertainment - that was where they got together and created great ideas."
The number of burlesque corset-clad dancers performing in the UK has also increased in recent years, according to Sky News, which suggests that the influence of celebrities like Dita Von Teese has empowered women.
