Burlesque inspired art goes on show
July 2, 2009
A South African gallery has begun displaying burlesque inspired art as part of a new exhibition on men's fascination with corsets.
Held at the Johannesburg Art Gallery until September 27th 2009, Vantage has been created by the artist Musha Neluheni and is attempting to challenge male stereotypes of the corset as an antiquated form of underwear.
The exhibition highlights the relevancy that traditional corsets play in today's society, particularly in medicine, fashion and the theatre.
Ms Neluheni's work, which is focused on the desire created by beautiful satin corsets, has been inspired by her former career in the fashion and cosmetic industries
Revealing a playful twist to her art, Musha has disclosed that the some of her pieces exchange the gender of the wearer of the lingerie.
She said: "With this show ... I'm turning the tables a little by placing men in corsets."
Last month, the power of corsets was emphasised by Rebecca Siebert in the Examiner, who suggested that they give women "the great look of confidence".
