Cate back in corset ten years on
October 16, 2007
Ten years after Cate Blanchett won a Golden Globe for her title role in Elizabeth, she is back in a corset again as the British queen in her new film Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which has just hit the screens.
The story continues on from the first film ten years later and chronicles Queen Elizabeth's reign in her middle years in power during the holy war with King Philip of Spain.
There could have been plenty of steamy corset scenes with Sir Walter Raleigh, played by Clive Owen, but the film portrays his purported love for the queen as a sham designed only to get funding for his trip to America, so there is little passion between the pair.
While Elizabeth was nominated for an Oscar in 1998 for best costume design, the garments in the second part of the story are equally noteworthy. Ms Blanchett stands out in colourful full-bodiced corset gowns, contrasting well with her pale skin.
However, Cate has her finger in many pies at the moment, and this is not the only role that required a corset of sorts. Ms Blanchett had to bandage her bosom in order to play Bob Dylan in November's forthcoming I'm Not There, in which she plays the folk star during his Blonde On Blonde era.
Whether or not the second Elizabeth film wins an Oscar for its corsets, Cate has already been touted to pick up an Academy Award for her portrayal of Dylan.
