Celebrities lead corset comeback
August 20, 2007
While Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Simpson and Scarlett Johansson are all actresses who have been relatively recent devotees to corsets, experts say that celebrities are the key to the comeback that corsets are making.
Michelle Barton, of Auckland's Costume Studio told the New Zealand Daily Herald that all sorts of corsets are popular at the moment. "It's not just the full corsets - the half-corsets, or waist cinchers, which sit just below your bust, are also really popular at the moment. They are a bit more comfortable to wear, too."
Air New Zealand Fashion Week organiser Pieter Stewart added that corsets are also likely to feature on the catwalks this season. "They are very sexy, especially worn as tops, in the summer or the evening," she said.
University of Auckland sociology lecturer Lane West-Newman told the newspaper that some corset fans would say that using a made to measure corset to create the figure you want "empowers" women and added that while endorsed by celebrities, corsets would remain popular.
Of course, corsets have always been popular with Kylie and Madonna, but it seems other stars are now cottoning on.
