Corset art tipped for international award
August 27, 2009
An artist in New Zealand has made the final of this year's Montana World Wearable Arts Awards with her uniquely designed period corset and skirt.
Made from woven traditional Pacific Island mats, the modern piece was inspired by the fashion culture of Fiji, where the artist spent a number of months, according to Otago Daily Times.
Rosy Harray told the newspaper that the corset art represents the modernisation and development of Polynesian nations.
The piece will be exhibited in Wellington, New Zealand, between September and October along with the other 164 garment entries from artists based in the UK, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, US and Canada.
Commenting on the event, founder and director of World of Wearable Art Suzie Moncrieff said: "It seems a global recession has set people's creative spirits alight with fresh ideas.
"Necessity is the mother of invention and it's rewarding to be inspired by people's innovative approaches."
