Corset headwear paraded at museum ball
June 18, 2007
In order to raise funds for the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, a ball was held, which saw some interesting headgear, including a corset.
Presently showcasing the Surrealist movement, over 450 guests turned up for the museum's ball in bizarre costumes. The venue itself was decorated with massive surreal branch sculptures complete with birds' nests and hung with abstract paintings, Newsday reports.
Typically surreal, corset action was seen not on the bodies of the guests, but in the hair of a student from Nassau Community College.
Michael Mazzei, owner of Manhasset hair salon NuBest, not only sponsored the exhibition, but also arranged for a group of student volunteers to be kitted out with bizarre hairstyles.
Danielle Callodow of Smithtown had her hair dressed in the style of a garden, completed with a white picket fence, while Juliet Cavallaro of Sea Cliff wore a crown of surreal butterflies in her hair, accessorised with a black veil.
But possibly most surreal of all, Kristen Carnie of East Islip was dubbed 'corset girl' for the evening due to the giant wire corset in her hair.
The creations took between four and six hours of work at the salon under the supervision of creative director Ali Yarkhan.
The 'Surrealism: Dreams on Canvas' exhibition will run at the museum until August 12th.
