Corsets boom in India
December 4, 2006
Corsets are enjoying a boom in popularity in the traditionally conservative Indian market.
The ever-increasing wealth of the developing middle class in India is fuelling demand for fashion, with corsets becoming particularly popular among women looking for that perfect hourglass figure.
Archana Pandey, a 25-year-old call centre executive in Mumbai, is one such advocate. The Calcutta Telegraph quoted her saying: "I wear a corset beneath my top that tucks in those extra inches and allows me to fit into my jeans without looking vulgar," successfully combining classical and contemporary fashion items to create sizzling styles.
Still relatively new as a fashion accessory in the Indian market, the success of films such as Titanic, Moulin Rouge and Chicago have helped the corset to regain the heights of popularity not seen since the 16th century.
But with modern corsets made from lighter, more flexible materials, such as plastic or nylon rather than whalebone, modern women can enjoy the flattering effects a corset provides without the fear of fainting, back pain or digestive problems.
And with Christmas just around the corner, the popularity of the corset is forecast to continue to grow.
