Corsets galore in new US reality show
November 10, 2006
A new US reality show is to recreate the American Civil War by pitting two teams of Confederate and Yankees against each other to win a massive prize.
Saber and Roses, named after an 1862 ball thrown by Confederate General Stuart, will see two teams representing the opposing sides face off in a number of historically authentic challenges to win various privileges within the show and the programme's ultimate prize of $1 million in gold.
Participants will be dressed in authentic period clothing, consisting of corsets for the women and uniforms for the men, while performing tasks such as loading and firing a musket three times in one minute, firing a cannon towards a target, riding a horse into battle, marching long distances barefoot and sabotaging an enemy camp.
Challenges for the women include squeezing into tight corsets, creating and sewing clothing, caring for the wounded, preparing a meal at a campfire, competitive ballroom dancing and 19th century etiquette.
Sabers and Roses will be hosted by Kevin Dolan, playing a real-life character called Johnny Reb, born in 1843.
