Corsets help with 'Ten years younger syndrome'
October 25, 2006
Fashion trends appear to be breaking down as women increasingly dress to impress with clothes typically worn by women ten years their junior, although often with a little help from a corset.
An ever larger number of well-off women in their 40s and 50s are following fashion like never before, frequently shopping with their daughters for the same brands, or taking inspiration from TV characters that usually appeal to younger audiences.
Indeed, a report from market research firm Mintel revealed that 23 per cent of women aged 45 to 54 agrees with the statement, "It is important for me to look well-dressed", compared with just 18 per cent of women who agreed back in 2001.
The Daily Mail quoted Richard Caines, retail analyst at Mintel, saying: "The baby boomers born after the war grew up with fashion, they are children of the Sixties and much more used to indulging themselves.
"They are thinking, acting and dressing so much younger than their parents would have done."
However, many women in their 40s and 50s are turning to an old friend to help them look their best in their new fashionable gear; the corset.
Helping to mask some of the more unpleasant effects of ageing, the corset is helping older women to recapture fashion and look their best.
But it is not just women in their 40s and 50s that are rediscovering fashion, but older women too, as 60 is predicted to become the new 40.
