Corsets hit the West End Stage
October 16, 2007
The long-awaited corset fest that is rock musical Rent finally hit the stage on Monday night for a special performance for the press.
At the Duke Of York Theatre in London, corsets were given a chance to shine and there were plenty of celebrities in the audience and at the after-show party to welcome the show to the stage.
Usually a corset fan, this time Kylie Minogue was a spectator to the action and turned up in a silver dress to support the production, directed by her good friend and creative collaborator William Baker.
Another corset fan popped up in the audience, too. Richard O' Brien, who was legendary for wearing a corset and suspenders in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, turned up to see what all the fuss was about.
Meanwhile, starring on stage, Siobhan Donaghy, who played Mimi - a dancer - got to wear a corset and spiky dominatrix heels as she sang in a soft and syrupy voice.
But it was Denise Van Outen, a veteran Broadway and West End performer who stole the show, in her role as bisexual performance artist Maureen.
Wearing a grey and black corset, complete with silver corset belt and black leather over-the-knee boots, Ms Van Outen outperformed everyone else on the stage.
