Corsets meet art in New York

Corsets have become the central theme for one New York City-based art exhibition, with artist Laura Ann Jacobs presenting a new collection of sculptures depicting the shapely feminine underwear.
The exhibition, taking place at the Mark Miller Gallery in New York, has been opened to celebrate Valentine's Day, and features corsets and other items of clothing crafted in resin and decorated with various objects and mosaic patterns.
Called Yes Dear, the exhibition is designed to explore the sexual undertones of Valentine's Day, as gallery owner Mark Miller explained.
"If Valentines Day has become for many an engineered and materialistic fantasy, then Laura's artistic vision serves to explore society's pursuit of physical perfection, and the extent to which we let fashion take us, our desire to be desired," Miller commented.
Laura Jacobs herself explained how corsets and underwear had become so central to her art, saying that she had initially started decorating wearable pieces.
"They sold well but customers were reluctant to hide such unique garments in their closets and started hanging them on their walls," she said.
"I decided to follow their lead, and made less wearable pieces and focused on making the designs more sculptural art."
