Corsets star in blockbuster
March 9, 2007
Corsets feature heavily in the latest Jane Austen adaptation to hit the big screen.
But rather than being based on the characters of the 19th century author, the corseted focus of this film will be Austen herself, in a biopic depicting the life and times of one of the most famous female authors ever to have lived.
Becoming Jane stars Anne Hathaway as the corseted Austen and the film, which also features British favourites Julie Walters and Dame Maggie Smith, has had some wonderful reviews.
The film will not be the first time Ms Hathaway has been seen in a corset, however, as the actress is also currently enjoying a stint in London's West End musical, Cabaret, where she is also wowing crowds with a corseted performance.
However, the corsets worn in Becoming Jane will be rather different to those enjoyed by modern women. Indeed, the corsets in the film were uncomfortable for the actresses, based on the original whalebone style of the 19th century. Women can breathe easy in the knowledge that today's corsets are far more sensual.
Becoming Jane is tipped to be a great success at the box office.
