Corsets Uncovered at Bath's Museum of Costume
October 20, 2006
Visitors to Bath are to be given the chance to better understand the lives of their great, great grandmothers with an exhibition at the Museum of Costume.
The Corsets Uncovered exhibition combines displays of historical corsets from the 19th century with images of women in carte de visite photographs to give an authentic view of female life a century ago.
However, the greatest appeal of Corsets Uncovered is the opportunity for adults and children alike to try on the garments.
A number of replica corsets are available in the gallery for visitors to get a feel of what it was like to wear a wood or whalebone supported corset all day, every day.
Indeed, for women in the mid 19th century the corset was an essential item of clothing, necessary to achieve the desired hourglass figure.
Today corsets are less common than in the 19th century, having taken on more sexual overtones than in yesteryear as modern construction techniques make them more comfortable for the modern woman to wear.
Corsets Uncovered seeks to bridge the gap between yesterday and today, charting the development of the corset from an essential to a sensual element of contemporary female fashion.
