Designer does Dickens corset-style
June 14, 2007
The small screen is set to see plenty of corsets in the near future as ITV has commissioned a remake of Charles Dickens' novel The Old Curiosity Shop.
Costume designer Lorna Marie Mugan will be trying to recreate the Victorian garments of the time and she says that designing for a period drama, creating corsets and gowns from the past, is much more difficult than designing for the modern era.
Ms Mugan told the Irish Times: "It's challenging but very creatively rewarding. Period drama is much more gratifying than contemporary drama because you get to recreate a time in history that is no longer with us."
She will have to do a great deal of work to recreate corsets of the time faithfully: Ms Mugan said: "It involves lots of research of the Victorian period through paintings, through literature and the illustrations that Dickens had in his books."
The 33-year-old has already been nominated twice in the 2004 Irish Film and Television Awards for her work on Inside I'm Dancing and Man About Dog, so it is hoped that her depiction of corsets will be accurate.
