Victorian drama, Desperate Romantics makes debut with corsets
July 22, 2009
A BBC drama centred on the lives of a group of 19th century painters has provided the corset with a new broadcasting vehicle.
Desperate Romantics, which tells the story of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, features a string of red-haired muses wearing traditional corsets in a costume drama comedy based around the experiences of the group of English artists.
Set in the alleys, public houses and galleries of London in the industrial revolution, the programme includes corset dresses worn on a variety of women, including Lizzie Siddal - historically the most important model to sit for the group.
Kate Harwood, executive producer at the BBC, said: "Desperate Romantics paints a modern, vivid and irreverent portrait of this group of painters whose attitude to the establishment makes them comparable to the punks."
Scheduled to appear on BBC 2 for another five episodes, the modern take on a traditional costume drama has a 9pm slot every Tuesday.
