Dita not only corset but fur fan
October 3, 2007
While burlesque dancer Dita von Teese is unlikely to give up her trademark corset anytime soon, the star is also unwilling to give up wearing fur.
Ms von Teese is currently featuring in an advertisement for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wearing a pink and black corset to promote the spaying of animals.
Yet the dancer has come under fire for wearing fox fur with a corset in some of her routines, with critics saying it seems hypocritical to then promote an anti-animal cruelty charity.
But Ms von Teese insists that she has done nothing untoward in starring in the campaign, as her particular message was to neuter pets.
"I'm not working with PETA to tell people to be vegetarians or to stop wearing fur," she told People magazine. "PETA's totally aware of me. I am there to strictly speak about spaying and neutering your pets."
Meanwhile PETA confesses to being aware of the corset-lover's favouring of fur.
A spokesman said: "She said she has some vintage furs she wears occasionally.
"PETA often works with a celebrity on an issue they feel comfortable supporting, whether it's supporting spaying and neutering, or speaking out against products that are tested on animals. So they may not be an animal rights activist, but their contribution to any of our campaigns is appreciated."
