Dita tells of popping her corset cherry
May 31, 2007
Dita von Teese has been talking to Australian magazine, the Age, about the very first corset she ever owned.
She says, after growing up in a farming town, she was always fascinated by Hollywood movies. "Everything about them was so exciting to me. I was very upset that I couldn't wear my Easter Sunday dress or my Christmas dresses all the time. It didn't make sense to me that I couldn't wear something pretty all the time. So I began plotting my womanhood at a young age."
Von Teese acquired her first corset while still at school, after going to work in a lingerie store. She says it was "pale-pink silk with black velvet trim".
Soon after the burlesque star began visiting flea markets in the hopes of finding vintage corsets to dress up in, just like the old Hollywood stars she so admired. "I had a lot of gay friends, and we all loved getting dressed up. For us, dressing up was theatre," she told the Age.
While at college, Von Teese studied historic costume and wore a corset every day for seven years until she had the 16 inch waist she dreamed of.
After years of practice dancing in bars, in 2002 she graced the cover of Playboy in an extremely tight black corset. And that was the moment that led to the rise and rise of Dita von Teese.
