Emily Blunt looks sharp in corset
October 17, 2007
British actress Emily Blunt is back in a corset again to play the infamous 19th century monarch Queen Victoria in the new film The Young Victoria.
The movie is directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, and produced by Graham King and Martin Scorsese, while the corset dress designer, Sandy Powell, has won Oscars for her costume work.
Playing the character of Queen Victoria during her youth, Ms Blunt will portray a more feisty version of the royal than we see in her portraits.
"She always looks like she's in mourning and miserable. The younger version of her was just such a contradiction. She was feisty and emotional. She laughed and danced and loved her opera and ballet," the actress told the San Francisco Chronicle.
"People don't know that side of her at all. I felt the weight of responsibility on this one because she was a remarkable girl, and I wanted to do her justice."
The corseted look also contradicts common perceptions of Victoria as being a plump ruler, since Emily plays the queen before her nine children were born.
This will not be the first time that Ms Blunt has been linked with times when corsets were an everyday garment. Fans can currently see her in The Jane Austen Book Club, where she plays a French teacher.
The 24-year-old is starring in The Young Victoria opposite Rupert Friend as Prince Albert. Presently, Friend is dating corset film stalwart Keira Knightley.
But Ms Blunt is not the only celebrity to appear in a corset in the film, as Princess Beatrice, executive producer Sarah Ferguson's daughter, dresses up in a corset to play Victoria's lady-in-waiting.
