Goths get fashionable
January 24, 2007
Corsets have long been associated with Goth culture and lifestyle, with the sensual and curvaceous shapes contrasting well with the black velvet corseted look.
However, the culture is rarely credited as being fashion-conscious in a wider sense. Now, though, that appears to be changing.
Although black may still be the colour of choice, the designs and fabrics finding their way into Goth culture are becoming increasingly varied, and new fashion magazines especially for Goths are springing up everywhere.
One such example is Gothic Beauty, published in Oregon in the US, which aims to reveal the most cutting-edge and creative gothic styles currently being worn.
"When most people hear the term 'Goth', they think of vampires, crushed black velvet, lacy Victorian gowns and pale skin," writes Gothic Beauty's Jonathan Williams in a recent issue of the magazine.
"But recently, Goth fashion has been infiltrated by forward-thinking styles more reminiscent of futuristic science fiction than fantastical images of past eras."
