Kate Winslet slips off her corset for new role
October 13, 2006
Perhaps still most famous for her roles as the corseted non-conformist in Titanic back in 1997, Kate Winslet slips off her corset to play a character dangerously similar to herself.
In The Holiday, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz play two women from different sides of the world desperately seeking something new and exciting.
Amanda Woods (Diaz) and Iris Simpkins (Winslet) are both suffering from man trouble at home, Diaz in LA and Winslet in London, and decide to swap homes.
While both find themselves in an unfamiliar town with not a friendly face in sight, support from Jude Law and Jack Black soon sees both women reboarding the love train.
But while Kate Winslet has comfortably played American characters, despite her previous performance as the corseted English heroine, she nevertheless found playing a contemporary Englishwoman a challenge.
"I kind of didn't like playing a contemporary English person! It was a very uncomfortable feeling, because in a period film, you dress a certain way, you speak a certain way; its a whole different ballgame.
"It turned out fine, but initially I thought, Damn! I can't hide behind anything. There's no wig, no corset, no dialect. It's just me, me and me!"
The Holiday is due for release in UK cinemas on December 8th 2006.
