Mafia mag sees corset models
July 9, 2007
A new magazine about the mafia has been getting people in Staten Island hot under the collar in more ways than one with mob stories and girls in corsets.
The first edition of Mob Candy has done little to improve Staten Island's reputation for illicit activity, but it can not be denied that the so-called glamour of the lifestyle has been reflected in the first photo shoot, which featured a model in a corset.
Next to the story of the infamous Don Carlo Gambino and a profile of Christian (Chris Paciello) Ludwigsen, model and barmaid Mercedes Maia appears in a photo posing on a bar in a leather corset.
The New Springville resident, who works at the Level One Lounge, also graces the cover of what sells itself as "the underworld magazine of Mafia politics, pleasures and power", wearing pinstripe lingerie and holding a silver semi-automatic pistol.
Although MTV's True Life documentary I'm a Staten Island Girl, provoked some negative responses when it was broadcast last year, the magazine's vice president of advertising and sales, Danielle DiPietro does not think that Mob Candy will suffer in the same way.
"Most of the responses we've had have been very positive. People tell me 'I can't wait until it comes out,'" Ms. DiPietro told during Staten Island Advance. "The stories are real. Nobody can really take offence to them," she added.
