Men beware, corset trend returns
July 16, 2009
The fashion world is preparing itself for the return of the male corset trend, according to the New York Times.
In an article discussing the merits of the underwear coined by its creators as "men's shapewear", the US national newspaper revealed that corsets for those with Y chromosomes have flitted in and out of fashion since the 18th century.
This year a variety of styles and shapes have been launched by designers, including T-shirts, singlets and briefs - all created with the aim of keeping well-nourished men's stomachs away from prying eyes.
The sales figures of a corset-inspired garment created by the Australian company Equmen illustrate the burgeoning popularity of the underwear - with Saks Fifth Avenue revealing that it has sold more than 30 per cent of its stock in just four weeks.
Eric Jennings, men's fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue, told the New York Times: "One of the reasons why men are interested now is that silhouettes in general are getting trimmer."
