Period drama that's not bound up in corsets
June 25, 2007
A new rendering of DH Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover has brought the period drama into the modern era and largely done away with the corsets usually associated with such films.
The latest portrayal of Lawrence's once-scandalous book uses modern times to attempt to bring that scandal back to life, meaning that it is no longer bound in the reverence often brought about by stiff, old-fashioned corsets, the New York Times reports.
However, the fact that the traditional corsets have been swept away in this version of events, the modern setting lends itself to thoughts of more modern corsets.
Modern corsets are a far cry from those worn in Lawrence's day, being far more sumptuous and sensual than those usually seen in period dramas.
As such, the modern woman would have been much more at home in this version, called simply Lady Chatterley, where the emphasis is clearly on the romance and passion between the main characters.
