Pitchfork sees a sharp corset act
July 20, 2007
At the Pitchfork Music festival in Chicago performances by De La Soul, GZA and Sonic Youth were all impressive, but nothing was as visually stunning as the sight of Of Montreal's frontman in a corset and thigh high-fishnets.
Over 47,000 turned up at Union Park to see the spectacle, in which Kevin Barnes first stripped down to a dominatrix-style leather corset, before eventually ending up in nothing but a G-string to belt out the Kinks' hit All Day and All of the Night.
But corseted Kevin wasn't the only bizarre image onstage for On Montreal's set as guitarist Bryan Poole wore a giant pair of pink angel wings and a metallic jacket. Perhaps it is no coincidence that one of their catchy indie pop hits is called Suffer For Fashion.
During the band's set, other surreal characters included a Darth Vader and a man with a giant fake head covered in balloons with Barnes' face on them.
Meanwhile if Of Montreal fans in the UK want to catch Barnes in a corset, they be playing dates in Huntingdon and Cardiff at the end of July with gigs in London and Brighton at the beginning of August.
