Renaissance corsets on display in London
October 13, 2006
Everyday objects from Italian Renaissance life, from corsets to cooking utensils, are on display at London's Victoria and Albert Museum for the At Home In Renaissance Italy exhibition.
Using common or garden objects from everyday life to bring the Italian Renaissance vividly to life, the exhibition explores the workings of Italian households during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Visitors can see reconstructions of Renaissance rooms, including the kitchen, study, salon and bedchamber, all of them filled with authentic period objects to bring the scene to life.
Among the finest pieces in the exhibition are a walker for young babies and a beautifully-worked metal corset for young noblewomen, guaranteeing erect posture and the perfect hourglass figure.
There are also a collection of period paintings by artists such as Fra Filippo Lippi, Lorenzo di Ranieri Scolari, Paolo Veronese, Vincenzo Campi and Sofonisba Anguissola depicting armoured men and corseted women, as well as scenes of home life during the Italian Renaissance.
The At Home In Renaissance Italy exhibition is showing at London's Victoria and Albert Museum and runs until January 7th 2007.
