Strap on a corset for Wicked Day
October 10, 2006
A new musical from Broadway telling the story of the Wicked Witches of Oz before Dorothy and her Ruby slippers arrived has spawned its own day of celebration.
Wicked has only been showing in the UK for a short period, but in that time it's witchy content and haunting music has captured the public imagination.
As a result, Wicked Day is to be held in the UK for the first time. The day is already firmly established in the US, with people dressing up in all manner of suitably scary fancy dress from corsets to cowl's.
The UK event will be held appropriately close to Halloween on October 29th in Seven Dials in Covent Garden.
One of the highlights of the day is the Be Wicked singing contest. Contestants dressed up in their corsets, capes and witch's outfits record their renditions of one of five songs from the Wizard of Oz on DVD or video, with ten finalists chosen to perform on the day in front of a panel of judges.
There is also a sweepstake to win a prize. To enter visitors must collect three green witches from one of the participating stores in the area.
