When I was 18 I was working as a fire dancer for a rock and roll nightclub. At this club, they had a cabaret style event which had a variety of acts including burlesque.
From the moment I saw the beautiful burlesque dancer glide onto the stage, adorned with crystals – I knew I had to know more!
Personally I find the challenges of being a performer half the fun! Like any self-employed industry, there is a certain aspect of finding what your niche is. There are a dime a dozen performers doing very similar acts and it does take time to find your style. The main thing I have learned in my journey is to be ‘true to yourself!”
Determination is essential. You will have periods where you will feel as though you want to quit and then you’ll have moments of true elation! It is a roller coaster ride and you need to buckle in tightly with the seatbelt of self confidence!
Besides the beautiful costumes? Well, it’s your fellow performers! Through the industry I have met many wonderfully talented people who have inspired me and supported me on my journey. I have made life long friends who I am blessed to know.
I tend to take inspiration from outside of the burlesque community. I will look at people in other industries and draw inspiration from them. Anyone with passion and determination in what they do fuels me.
